Broadway Rose Education Classes2010 Summer Teen Theater Workshop July 12 – 31Big RiverThe Adventures of Huckleberry FinnDirected by Isaac Lamb Musical Direction by Mont Chris Hubbard Choreographed by Amy Beth Frankel This intensive 3-week training workshop is designed for students (age 12-18) who are serious about pursuing musical theater performance or tech work. Participants will get real-world experience by rehearsing and mounting a full-scale production of the Broadway hit Big River, winner of 7 Tony Awards! Based on Mark Twain’s novel, this Tony Award-winning musical follows the adventures of one of America’s best-loved literary figures, Huck Finn, as he makes his way along the mighty Mississippi. Join the irrepressible Huck on a musical journey as he helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom. Big River is a hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming celebration of pure Americana, with a jubilant score of Cajun, gospel, folk, country and blues by country music legend Roger Miller. Workshop: Monday-Friday, July 12 – July 28 (Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) Public Performances: July 28, 29, 30, & 31 at 2 p.m. & July 30 at 6 p.m. Workshop and performances will be held at The Broadway Rose’s New Stage at 12850 SW Grant Avenue, Tigard. Open to ages 12-18 Space is limited. Tuition: $500 (a limited number of need-based full and partial scholarships are available. Some scholarship funds provided by Norb and Leah Murray.) Audition Information Auditions will be Monday, June 21, 10 am – 2 pm and Tuesday, June 22 from 10 am – 2 pm by appointment only at The Broadway Rose New Stage, 12850 SW Grant Avenue, Tigard. Potential students will be auditioning in groups of 10-15 per hour. All ethnicities strongly encouraged to audition. Auditions will be composed of group activities, games, and each auditioner will perform a 2 minute solo piece of their choice: consider a song (bring sheet music in your own key), a monologue, a dance, performance art, even stand-up comedy!
Auditions are to determine the enrollment of the workshop. Casting of specific roles will be determined once the workshop has begun. All workshop members will have a role in show. Big River Characters: (casting will be gender blind; all ethnicities encouraged to audition) Huckleberry Finn: A rough and tumble near-orphan who was taken in and "civilized" by Widow Douglas. Prefers freedom to domestic life. Widow Douglas: a strict but loving woman who takes Huck in and raises him. Aunt Sally: Huck’s Aunt. Miss Watson: Widow Douglas' friend. A strict and traditional woman that helps to raise Huck. Jim: Widow Douglas' slave. He is desperate to be free so he can buy back his wife and children. The Duke: (Comic Role) a broken down actor turned con artist - conniving. Tom Sawyer: Huck's friend. Clever, but often overly dramatic. Ben, Hank, Jo Harper: Tom & Huck's schoolmates. Pap Finn: Huck's no-good alcoholic father who abandoned him some time ago. Returns to collect on Huck's trust fund. The King: an escaped convict and con artist. Mary Jane Wilkes: The grieving and pretty eldest girl of the wealthy Peter Wilkes, who recently passed away. Judge: A man with high respect for the letter of the law.
