Music and Lyrics by Roger Miller
Book by William Hauptman
Adapted from the novel by Mark Twain
Performed by The Broadway Rose’s Teen Theater Workshop
participants.
Winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Book, Best Original Score, and
Best Musical, this heart-warming American saga of self-discovery and
friendship begins on a raft on the mighty Mississippi River in the 1840s. The
irrepressible Huck Finn and his friend Jim, a slave, are two unlikely runaways
who join together on an epic journey in search of freedom and a better life.
Fusing the novel's rich characterizations with a lush soaring score, this
mesmerizing musical extravaganza captures the foot-stomping rhythms,
poignant sounds, and indefinable spirit of life on the big river.
The intensive 3-week training workshop is designed for young performers
who are serious about pursuing musical theater in high school, college, or
professionally. Focused on building real-world experience in a professional
setting, the 18 participating students will rehearse and mount a full-scale
production of Big River. Students from all over the Portland Metro area are
participating, representing high schools from Tigard, Jefferson, Cleveland,
and West Linn.

A Singular Sensation
Conceived and Originally Directed and Choreographed by
Michael Bennett
Book by James Kirkwood & Nicholas Dante
Music by Marvin Hamlisch
Lyrics by Edward Kleban
Co-Choreographed by Bob Avian
For 17 dancers it’s a chance of a lifetime to land a
chorus role in a Broadway musical, and they put themselves
on the line for their dream. During the grueling audition,
the performers reveal their most personal stories of
ambition, joy and heartache in interviews with the
director. When they’re done, only eight will remain.
Memorable musical numbers include “What I Did for
Love,” “Dance: Ten; Looks: Three,” “The Music and the
Mirror,” and “One (Singular Sensation).” A brilliant
blending of dance, song, and drama.
